Now it is back in a new form, Persona 5 Royal, and it wants to steal my heart again. My favorite game of 2016 (only just beating out Uncharted 4) Persona 5 took up over 100 hours of my life, and it was worth every minute. Definitely worth a pick up.It seems like an eternity since Persona 5 first released on the PlayStation 4, but in reality it has only been 3 years. The rest however was good and solid story telling. Out of my 120 hour play through, maybe 10 hours was completely wasteful bloat and 40 hours was spent in mementos grind. This isnt the only time the game has sections like this and it gets painful after a while. I would say my only issue is the pacing, particularly for the 'royal' extensions where there is a hell of a lot of filler in the form of travelling to see people when you dont actually have a choice so it might as well be cut scenes rather than forcing me to run through the underground system for 10 minutes for a 1 minute dialogue 7/8 times in a row. Combat system is interesting and took a lot of lessons from FF10. Character development is interesting and nuanced (except for skull. Turn based JRPGs have been an abandoned format and it definitely felt good to play a game using this system again. I completed it after 120 hours and my general thoughts for the last 5/10 hours was "get on with it", which is a shame. I loved the first 80 hours, but after that it did feel like it was dragging its feet. So you’re looking at almost 300hours of game play. And to fully max out the game, there’s the optional NewGame+ mode.

Just make sure you head to the PlayStation or Xbox stores to download the free extras (it doesn’t tell you on the box so I’m telling you here.)
